Leeds Green Party rejects the comments made on immigration by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
In a speech on Monday 12th May, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that we risk “becoming an island of strangers”, drawing similarities to Enoch Powell’s quote “They found themselves made strangers in their own country” from his infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech in 1968.
As Starmer flirts with fascism in a desperate bid to woo fans of Farage, Leeds Green Party wants to send a positive message of hope and unity and highlight the benefits of immigration.
Chris Bell, candidate in the Morley South By-Election says:
‘Our vision of Leeds and Morley is of a city of belonging where all communities bring the best of their experiences to enrich the city through cultural diversity and mutual respect and understanding for our fellow citizens’.
The upcoming by-election is our chance to show the establishment parties that we value immigrants’ contributions to public services, local businesses, our NHS, and communities as they build better lives and enrich our country.
Leeds Green Party are clear: a vote for Reform is an endorsement of fear of others, and the double headed uniparty that are Labour and the Conservatives. We are also clear that this will only change course by rejecting this division at the ballot box.
The Green Party is determined to make all people feel valued and welcome. How we treat people who have chosen the UK as their home is an important signal of our values and national character, which we believe values solidarity both at home and abroad.
- We welcome the economic and societal contributions that immigrants and refugees make to British society
- We understand that migration is natural and people have always and will always move
- No one becomes a refugee lightly. People leave their homes, friends and often their family because they are forced to do so through circumstances that make remaining at home intolerable.
- We need safe and legal routes by which those fleeing persecution, war, or climate disaster may arrive in the country of their choice to make their case without having to risk their lives.
- We accept we all have a collective responsibility for the climate emergency and that the UK has a duty to support people forced to move due to the changes in their home environment, whether internally or from abroad.
