Statement about the proposed expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport

Don’t Ignore the inconvenient truth, say Greens

by Colin Noble, 9th August 2024

Yesterday evening (9.8.24) BBC Look North covered the proposed expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport – seeking long haul flights and increasing the number of passengers from 4 million to 7 million per year.

The Chief Executive of the Airport was given a large amount of time to make the specious arguments that airport expansion would lead to more jobs, and the laughable claim that the airport would be carbon neutral by 2050 . Moreover, his totally false assertion that the current transport infrastructure to and from the airport could cope with three million more passengers went completely unchallenged by the BBC.

Leeds Green Party calls upon Leeds City Council to remember that it has declared a ‘climate emergency’, and that it has to make meaningful efforts to ensure that this emergency is treated as such and is not just a passing political slogan.

This means that the Council has to do all that it can to reduce carbon emissions, not increase them under pressure from commercial interests.
